The Chinese government cries of harassment by Indonesian Navy warships on Chinese fishermen. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said several Indonesian navy vessels harassed and shot Chinese fishing boats in China’s traditional fishing grounds in the southwest of the South China Sea, June 17.
The Indonesian Navy said warning shots were fired by navy vessels after spotting 12 foreign vessels fishing in waters within Indonesian exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The Indonesian authority captured one fishing vessel flying Chinese flag with 7 crew members.
“One Chinese fishing boat was damaged and one crew member shot injured, while another fishing boat and the seven people on board were detained by the Indonesian side,” Chinese spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

“This incident took place in waters that are Chinese fishermen’s traditional fishing grounds and where China and Indonesia have overlapping claims for maritime rights and interests,” the Chinese spokesperson added.
She added that the Indonesian warships violated UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), saying the actions “with a willful resort to force put the life and property of Chinese fishermen in danger.”

“China strongly protests and condemns the abuse of force. China urges the Indonesian side to stop taking actions that complicate, exaggerate the dispute and undermine peace and stability, and handle the fishery issue at sea in a constructive way,” she added.
