Citizens took to social media their feelings about Tuesday’s landmark ruling on the contested West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) as they discouraged people to buy Philippine mangoes from Cebu – considered to be one of the best in the world.
BBC said in its story that there are slogans posted on China’s social media site Weibo such as:
*“If you want to eat mango, buy Thailand’s”
*“Starve the Filipinos to death”
Others are commenting to these posts; maddened as well.
*“If you love China, don’t buy Filipino imports
*“I will eat Guangxi dried mango, drink Yunnan coffee and eat durian from Hainan. Anyway the point is, I’m making sure my money stays in China.”
BBC also said in its story that there are some online shops that refuse to sell Filipino products.
“Our online shop will not sell Cebu mango from the Philippines and will not sell any snacks imported from the country anymore,” it quoted one statement from a vendor in Shanghai.

Last July 12, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands favored the Philippines; arguing that China has no legal basis on claiming “historic rights” over the contested waters.
The Philippines filed the case in January 2013 after the standoff with China in 2012. China has been exerting massive reclamation efforts in the disputed territory; constructing bases and even completing an airstrip.
China is claiming rights over the water based on the 9-dash demarcation line drawn on a map that dates back to the 1940s. The Philippines, under the leadership of former President Benigno Aquino III, refused to hold bilateral talks with China.
